The king of the birds, Garuda has the head of a human and the body of an eagle. It once devoured countless snakes, but then a Buddhist prince taught Garuda the value of abstinence, allowing it to ascend to holy status. Now the mount of the god Vishnu, it is said to be so large that it can blot out the sun. It has the power to change the size of its body at will. Some stories tell of humans who have been able to secure its aid and become immortal.
