Medusa is the youngest of the three gorgon sisters, with hair composed of writhing snakes. She was originally a beautiful woman, but drew Athena's wrath causing Athena to turn Medusa into a grotesque monster. Anyone who looks into her piercing eyes is immediately turned to stone. Unlike her two older sisters, she is not immortal. In Greek myth, the hero Perseus slew Medusa by cutting off her head.
