The auspicious tiger god of the west in ancient Chinese mythology. The tiger represents strength and the desire for competition. Certain tigers born with a white sheen to their hair are said to live 500 years, then become this auspicious animal. White symbolizes grain, which shines lustrously in the sun, as the white tiger is said to be the spirit of the earth. In ancient Chinese lore, the tiger, not the lion, is said to be the "king of the animals".
