Meaning: Old English for "raw spirit"

A spirit described in Scottish folktales. In the oldest version of the legend, wraiths were spirits of protection said to prevent a corpse from decaying. It is unclear when they took on an evil cast. A popular superstition is that meals prepared during funeral rites attract wraiths.At some Scottish funerals, meals are not prepared because of this superstition.
